A general contractor coordinates larger projects such as building new houses, renovating old ones, and home repairs. He doesn't provide labor, but hires subcontractors who can complete different tasks. Concrete subs can be roofers, rough framing carspentry crews or plumbers. Clear contracts must be signed by the GC

How to replace a broken window

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push your pane back into its opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
