How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
