How To
How to replace a broken window
The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.
First step: Remove the old glass from its frame
To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.
Second step: Clean the new glass
To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.
Step 3: Install the new glass
Attach the window panes to the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.
Fourth step: Repair the damaged area
Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.
The fifth step is to seal the area.
After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.
Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
