Get rid of your gutters

Spring is the perfect time to clean your gutters. They not only hold water, but can also be home to pests. These pests can bring about illness in your family. You should not leave the debris unattended for too long as they can sprout plants. Gutters that aren't properly maintained could cost more to repair or replace. A good idea is to have your roof checked and cleaned annually.

Examine your roof

If you've ignored your roof during the winter months, you may be surprised to learn that winter weather can do a lot of damage to it. Spring is the perfect season to inspect your roof. Catch any issues early before they turn into major problems. A professional inspection will help you to avoid costly repairs and can identify cracks, leaks and missing shingles. Here are some tips to inspect your roof this spring:

Verify the foundation walls

Before the trees and other summer vegetation cover the foundation walls, inspect them for cracks. Examine exposed foundation portions, such as garage foundation walls and basement foundation walls. Cracks that have longer or wider sections may indicate damage due to freezing or thawing. Foundation cracks should not be attempted by homeowners. Rather, contact a professional to perform this spring home maintenance task.

Check your foundation vents

In spring, it is important to check your foundation vents or weepholes. They allow air circulation underneath your home, and they prevent mold growth and excess moisture. Additionally, they deter critters. Spring home maintenance should include removing leaves and debris from foundation vents, and cleaning them thoroughly. Also, make sure to inspect the foundation vent screens for cracks - pests like rodents and rats can squeeze through these small gaps.

FAQ

Are handymen insured?

Yes! Most insurance companies cover liability claims up to $1 million for accidental property damage and bodily injury. This means that your insurance company will compensate you for any damage caused by an accident during the project.

Which is better: contracting, or being a handyman.

As you only require yourself and your tools, being a handyman takes less time than contracting. While contractors often rely on subcontractors, handymen must be able and willing to manage their own work schedules.

Is a handyman able to make suggestions on how to improve my house?

Absolutely! Handyman training is in all areas of home repairs and maintenance. He or she is trained in what repairs are needed and what does not. Don't be afraid to ask for help whenever you need it.

Do I have to train a handyman?

No. Handymen already have the skills and knowledge to complete any job. You only need to provide the materials needed to complete the task.

Who will complete my handyman work?

If you are looking for someone local to perform a one-off job, like replacing a light fixture or fixing a leaky faucet, you won't find a better price than a professional handyman. A handyman service might be a good option if you have multiple jobs to do, such as replacing a roof or installing floor tiles.

Handyman Services is a service that offers ongoing support such as maintenance and repair.

How long does it take for a handyman complete a project.

It all depends upon the size of your project. It takes longer to complete smaller projects, while larger projects take less time. However, no matter the project's size, a handyman usually finishes within one week.

Do I need to pay a handyman per hour or per project?

It all comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer to pay an hourly rate so that they know how much their handyman costs. Some prefer to pay each project individually, especially if they are working on multiple jobs simultaneously. Either way works fine.

How To

How to replace a broken window

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. This repair will take only 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
