How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Let the caulking dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
