FAQ

Should I pay a handyman by the hour or per-project basis?

Personal preference will dictate the final price. Some people prefer to pay an hourly rate so that they know how much their handyman costs. Others prefer to pay for each completed project since they may have multiple jobs simultaneously. Either way is fine.

Which is more difficult: being a contractor or a handyman.

Being a handyman requires fewer resources than contracting, as you only need yourself and tools. Contractors rely on subcontractors to complete most of the work. You must manage your own schedule and workload.

What qualifications does a handyman need?

You will need patience to be a handyman. Also, experience with working with electrical systems, carpentry skills and plumbing knowledge is essential.

There are many job opportunities for qualified people, but you might not be qualified if you don’t know what they mean.

This is why you might consider enrolling in a school that specializes in these types of courses.

How do you replace a broken window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
