How do I replace a damaged window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
