FAQ

What can a handyman do to fix my leaky faucets

Although a handyman may be able to handle minor repairs, he will not have the necessary training to tackle major projects such as wiring a house or installing custom cabinets. Handymen can complete minor home improvement tasks.

Should I pay a handyman by the hour or per-project basis?

It all comes down to personal preference. Some prefer to pay per hour so they can see the actual cost of their handyman. Some prefer to pay each project individually, especially if they are working on multiple jobs simultaneously. It doesn't matter which way you go, it works great.

Are there any requirements to be a handyman?

To become an independent contractor in most states, you don't need to have a license (as opposed with a salaried worker). You must still meet certain requirements.

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Do you have a high-school diploma or GED?
  • Take a four-week course at vocational school.
  • A background check is required by the Department of Licensing.
  • Annual registration requires payment of $20

You will also require business licenses as well workers' compensation coverage.

What is the difference?

Handyman services can be provided for a wide range of tasks, such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, cabinet building, flooring, tiling and kitchen remodeling. Carpenters specialize in woodworking. They can build cabinets and walls, doors, windows or stairs.

How To

How to Replace a Broken Window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
